(7 sep. 1917, Atlantic City, N.J., EE.UU.–9 jun. 2000, Seattle, Wash.).

Pintor estadounidense. A los 13 años de edad se mudó junto a su familia a Harlem, en la ciudad de Nueva York. Desarrolló su talento en las clases de arte patrocinadas por la WPA en 1932. Sus obras retratan escenas de la vida e historia afroamericana, con un realismo vívido y estilizado. El gouache y la témpera fueron los medios característicos de Lawrence. El uso de colores marrón oscuro y negro para las sombras y los contornos, en una paleta generalmente vibrante, otorgó a su obra un matiz distintivo. Sus obras más conocidas son las series sobre temas históricos y sociales, como Vida en Harlem (1942) y Guerra (1947). Entre sus trabajos posteriores se cuenta una poderosa serie sobre la lucha por la integración. A partir de 1971 dictó clases en la Universidad de Washington.
